Basic Introduction To Solvents
May 18, 2018

A solvent is a liquid that dissolves a solid, liquid, or gaseous solute, which in turn becomes a solution, and the solvent usually has a lower boiling point and is prone to volatilization. Or it can be removed by distillation, leaving the dissolved material behind. Therefore, solvents may not produce chemical reactions to the solute.

Solvents are usually transparent, colorless liquids, and most of them have a unique odor. The concentration of a solution depends on the amount of matter dissolved in the solvent. Solubility is the solvent at a certain temperature, can dissolve the maximum number of substances. Organic solvents are mainly used for dry cleaning (e.g., four vinyl chloride) as paint thinner (e.g. toluene, turpentine), for washing or removal of glue (e.g. acetone, methyl acetate, ethyl acetate), rust (e.g. hexane), as detergent (lemon essence), used in perfume (alcohol) with chemical synthesis (chemical

Synthesis).

The gas and solids are used to be called solutes, and liquids are called solvents. For the solution consisting of two liquids, it is often called a solvent, and a small amount is called a solute. Divided into inorganic solvents and organic solvents two major categories. Water is the most widely used inorganic solvents, alcohol, gasoline, chloroform and acetone are commonly used organic solvents.
